The cost of the Weather Guarantee varies based on location, time of year, and the predicted weather risk for the specific reservation. It’s calculated in real-time based on both historical weather data and current weather forecasts for the location. This ensures that the price is accurate and relevant to the specific weather conditions a guest might encounter. Typically, the price is about 10% of the total cost of the eligible items in the cart (such as lodging, lift tickets, or activities), with dynamic calculations ensuring fairness and accuracy.

The reimbursement amount is based on the total cost of eligible items in the reservation, such as lodging, lift tickets, golf tee times, or camping trips. The total cost is divided across the days of the stay or the duration of the activity.

For example, if a guest books a golf tee time for $100 and a Weather Guarantee is triggered, the guest will be reimbursed the full cost of the tee time. Similarly, for a multi-day camping trip, the daily reimbursement amount will be calculated based on the total cost divided by the number of days onsite.

This ensures that guests are compensated fairly for the affected portion of their trip or activity.

The threshold refers to the amount of precipitation (rain, snow, sleet) or the temperature that must occur during a specific time period to trigger a reimbursement. For example, the threshold could be 1.5mm of rain per hour for 3 or more hours. This threshold is determined by Sensible Weather’s team of climate scientists based on historical weather data, location, and the specific weather patterns of each trip.

When the risk of inclement weather is higher, tiered Weather Guarantees are offered to ensure a positive guest experience while keeping the service affordable. Price and reimbursement thresholds vary for each custom Weather Guarantee. Sensible Weather uses next-generation weather data to set the price and reimbursement thresholds for each Weather Guarantee.

Example Weather Guarantees:

Precipitation Duration: 3+ hours of precipitation between 8 AM and 8 PM.

Precipitation  Intensity: Precipitation must meet or exceed a specified rate, typically 1.5 mm per hour.

Weather Guarantees can cover all forms of precipitation that occur during the guest’s visit, including rain, snow, and sleet. Additionally, Weather Guarantees can cover high temperatures that exceed a specified threshold.

Step 1: The Weather Guarantee can be added during the customer’s booking process, either online or over the phone. The details and cost of the guarantee are clearly communicated during the checkout process.

Step 2: After booking, guests will receive confirmation from Sensible Weather with full details on how the guarantee works and what they can expect during their stay or activity.

Step 3: During the guest’s stay or activity, Sensible Weather monitors weather conditions. If the weather meets the threshold for reimbursement, the guest will receive an email and text with a link to initiate their reimbursement.

• No claims: Sensible Weather proactively initiates a reimbursement based on the weather that day (forecast and actuals), requiring no claims or hassle.
• In-trip coverage: Most insurance policies cover things that go wrong before a trip or activity starts or on the way to a travel destination, whereas Sensible’s Weather Guarantee only applies once a traveler is in a destination and experiences inclement weather. 

Sensible Weather manages all reimbursements directly with the guest. Guests will receive emails or texts from Sensible Weather if their Guarantee is triggered, along with instructions to collect their payout. Guests do not need to file a claim in order to receive a payout.
